Zigbee Devices: Gateways, Sensors and Controllers
Short answer: Zigbee is a low-power wireless mesh standard based on IEEE 802.15.4 and widely used for building automation, hotels and energy management. A Zigbee network needs a coordinator, usually part of a gateway, and then adds devices such as meters, thermostats, sensors and relays. Mains-powered devices can relay messages, which extends coverage across a building.
Zigbee device roles
| Device role | Examples | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coordinator / gateway | Zigbee gateway, USB coordinator | Forms the network and connects it to a cloud or local platform |
| Router | Mains-powered meters, relays, thermostats | Extends the mesh by relaying messages |
| End device | Battery sensors, door and motion sensors | Low power, does not relay messages |

How to plan a Zigbee deployment
- Choose a gateway or coordinator that supports the devices and the platform you plan to use.
- Check that devices support Zigbee 3.0 and the features you need.
- Plan mains-powered routers so that every room or floor has a relay path.
- Decide the integration route: vendor cloud, Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT or your own platform.
- Choose a Zigbee channel that avoids your Wi-Fi channels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Zigbee and Zigbee 3.0?
Zigbee 3.0 brings earlier Zigbee application profiles together into one standard so that devices from different manufacturers can join the same network more easily. Check each device's documentation for the supported clusters and features.
Do Zigbee devices work without internet?
A Zigbee network can run locally through its coordinator. Whether features such as remote access work without internet depends on the gateway and platform you use.
