How to Choose a ZigBee Gateway: SEG-X3, SEG-X5 or SEG-X6
Short answer: Choose the SEG-X5 when you have wired Ethernet and need up to 200 ZigBee endpoints with open APIs, the SEG-X3 for a plug-in gateway with Wi-Fi and open APIs, and the SEG-X6 when the site only has cellular coverage and you need 4G LTE Cat1.
What are the differences between the SEG-X3, SEG-X5 and SEG-X6?
| Factor | SEG-X3 | SEG-X5 | SEG-X6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | Wi-Fi | Ethernet RJ45, 10/100 Mbps | 4G LTE Cat1 with SIM card |
| ZigBee | ZigBee 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 | ZigBee 3.0 | ZigBee 3.0 |
| Device capacity | Not stated on the datasheet | Up to 200 endpoints (at least 24 repeaters); 32 end devices with no repeaters | Not stated |
| Power | AC 100–240 V, direct plug-in, 1 W | Micro-USB, DC 5 V / 2 A | USB-C, DC 5 V / 2 A |
| Open API | Server API and Gateway API | Server API and Gateway API | Not stated |
| Local linkage, scenes, schedules | Not stated | Yes | Yes |
How many ZigBee devices can a gateway support?
The SEG-X5 datasheet states that it connects up to 200 endpoints, and that there must be at least 24 ZigBee repeaters. It also states that only up to 32 end devices can connect when there are no ZigBee repeaters. Mains-powered ZigBee devices act as repeaters. Capacity figures for the SEG-X3 and SEG-X6 are not given in their documents.
Which gateway should I choose?
- Choose the SEG-X5 for hotels, buildings and projects with wired Ethernet, many ZigBee devices and a third-party cloud server.
- Choose the SEG-X3 for small installations where a plug-in gateway with Wi-Fi is convenient.
- Choose the SEG-X6 where there is no wired internet or Wi-Fi and a SIM card is the practical uplink. Check that the LTE bands match your region (FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, B28).

Frequently asked questions
Does the SEG-X5 support BLE?
The SEG-X5 datasheet lists BLE 4.2 as optional.
Which gateway has an open API?
The SEG-X3 and SEG-X5 datasheets describe an open Server API and Gateway API for integration with third-party cloud servers. No API information is given for the SEG-X6.
