Smart Thermostats: HVAC Types and Compatibility
Short answer: A smart thermostat controls heating and cooling equipment and connects to a network so it can be scheduled, monitored or automated. In North America most residential systems use 24 V AC control wiring, while in Europe thermostats commonly switch a boiler, heat pump or underfloor heating circuit through a relay. How to choose a smart thermostat
- Identify your heating and cooling equipment and the control interface it expects.
- Check stage count and heat pump support if you have multi-stage or heat pump equipment.
- Confirm how the thermostat is powered, for example whether it needs a C-wire.
- Decide the connection method: Wi-Fi, Zigbee or another protocol, and the platform it must work with.
- Decide the user interface: touchscreen, buttons or app-only control.
