What should I check before choosing a smart thermostat?

Do I need a C-wire?
Some smart thermostats need a common wire (C-wire) to stay powered, while others can run without one. If your system has no C-wire, options include adding a wire or using a power-extender accessory where the manufacturer supports it. Check the datasheet.
How do heat pumps and multi-stage systems affect compatibility?
Heat pump systems need reversing valve control, often labelled O/B, and multi-stage equipment needs a thermostat with enough stages. Confirm stage count and heat pump support in the datasheet.
How do Zigbee thermostats connect?
A Zigbee thermostat joins a Zigbee network through a gateway or coordinator, which then connects to a local platform or cloud. In hotels and multi-room buildings this allows central control and schedule management.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 24 V AC thermostat control a European boiler?
Not in general. European boiler and relay systems use a different control interface from North American 24 V AC equipment. Choose a thermostat designed for your region's equipment.
Do Zigbee thermostats need a gateway?
Yes. A Zigbee thermostat needs a coordinator, usually built into a gateway, to join the network and to reach any platform or cloud.
What if my system has no C-wire?
Check whether the thermostat can run without one, whether the manufacturer offers a power accessory, or whether a wire can be added. Ask a qualified installer if unsure.
