Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Smart Energy Meters
What is the difference between single-phase, split-phase and three-phase supply?
A single-phase supply has one live conductor and a neutral. A split-phase supply, common in North American homes, provides two 120 V live legs that together give 240 V. A three-phase supply has three live conductors and usually a neutral, and is widely used in commercial and industrial buildings and in many European homes.
| Supply type | Typical nominal voltage | Where it is common | CTs for whole-supply metering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-phase (Europe, UK) | 230 V | Apartments, small homes, small shops | 1 |
| Split-phase (North America) | 120/240 V | Houses and small buildings | 2 |
| Three-phase (Europe) | 400 V line to line, 230 V phase to neutral | Larger homes, commercial and industrial sites | 3 |
| Three-phase (North America) | 208Y/120 V or 480Y/277 V | Commercial and industrial buildings | 3 |
Voltages vary by country and site. Always confirm the real values on your distribution board labels or with a qualified electrician.
How do I know which supply type I have?
Check your electrical panel documentation, the main breaker and the utility meter, or ask a qualified electrician. Do not open a live distribution board yourself.
Why does supply type matter when choosing a meter?
The meter must measure every live conductor to report correct power and energy. A single-phase meter on a three-phase feed only sees part of the load, while a three-phase meter reports voltage, current, power and power factor per phase, which helps with load balancing and fault finding.
When should I use a DIN rail or multi-circuit meter?
Use them when you need to see where energy goes, for example per floor, tenant, machine line or major appliance. A DIN rail meter fits inside the distribution board, and a multi-circuit meter reads several circuits with one device.

Frequently asked questions
Can a three-phase meter be used on a single-phase system?
Some three-phase meters can be used on single-phase installations by using only one channel, but this depends on the model. Check the supported wiring modes in the product datasheet.
Do I need CT clamps?
CTs are the usual choice for higher currents and for retrofits, because split-core CTs clip around a conductor without cutting it. Fitting them near live conductors should be done by a qualified electrician.
Is split-phase the same as two-phase?
No. Split-phase is a single-phase supply with a center-tapped transformer that gives two 120 V legs 180 degrees apart. It is sometimes called two-phase in everyday speech, but it is not true two-phase power.
